Two layer or not two layer, that is the question. Actually, it's not even a debate. Adding a second layer of shingles to a roof is just a bad idea. Yes, it saves a few bucks, but you're gambling that your flashing, valleys, ice & water barrier, and underlayment are all good for another 30+ years. News flash; they're not good for another 30+ year. Plus, you're assuming your roof is designed and built to withstand the extra weight of a second layer along with a couple feet of wet, heavy snow. Well, we've seen a lot of Wisconsin roofs and very few are engineered for the extra weight of a second layer of shingles. Don't trust us? Just ask around to your local permit office. More and more towns, cities, and counties in Wisconsin are outlawing a second layer of shingles for all of these reasons.
At Watts Up Roofing, we only offer full tear-off roofing solutions, so that the roof decking and underlying structure can be properly inspected before we being the process of installing your new roof system. Oftentimes, we find weak, rotting, decaying, or damaged decking and / or structure that we must first replace to establish a solid foundation. As an engineering focused company, we can repair any roofing problem including droop, saddlebacking, broken trusses, overloaded rafters, and more. We've seen it all and fixed it!
